The Motor Vehicle Investigations Unit (MVIU) was established administratively in 1978 and codified in statute under Section 42-1-222, C.R.S. on July 1, 2004, and states “the Department shall establish a Motor Vehicle Investigations Unit to investigate and prevent fraud concerning the use of driver’s licenses, identification cards, motor vehicle titles and registrations, and other motor vehicle documents issued by the Department. Such unit shall also assist victims of identity theft by means of such documents.
The State of Colorado Department of Revenue, Division of Motor Vehicles, Motor Vehicle Investigations Unit, is made up of two separate units; the Investigations Unit (MVIU) and the Law Enforcement Communications Center (LECC). The Investigations Unit consists of (14) full-time employees, comprised of (1) Chief of Investigations, (1) Agent in Charge, (1) Supervisory Investigator, (8) Criminal Investigators, (1) Investigative Analyst, and (2) Administrative Assistants. The MVIU Chief, Agent in Charge, and Criminal Investigators hold Peace Officers Standard Training (P.O.S.T.) certifications and have over 220 years of combined law enforcement experience.
The Law Enforcement Communications Center is considered an essential unit, and they are on duty 24/7/365. The team is led by (1) Office Manager, (2) Lead Data Specialists, and (9) Data Specialists. The mission of the LECC is to support the criminal justice community and government agencies by being the first point of contact for those agencies seeking DMV information such as driving privileges, vehicle registration and insurance information, title histories, and DMV images captured during the issuance of identification cards and driver licenses.
