“It is fine to celebrate success, but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure.”
Bill Gates
Letting our kids ‘fail’...it’s a scary concept! Of course as parents, we want to see our kids succeed in everything they do- whether it is getting an ‘A’ on their Science project or making the best school and travel ball team. Sometimes the failure can be a result of their own actions- such as not studying for a test, choosing preferred activities over completing homework, forgetting the necessary books at school, or even putting up a fight with parents until we just give up. Our instincts kick in and we think- what can I do to fix this…ask for an extension? Get a copy from another student? Give him/her answers? Drop it off at school? In instances like these, it can be hard for parents to step back and let their child accept the natural consequences that result.
When kids don’t experience what it’s like to fail, they miss the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and improve in the future. What they do learn is that they don’t have to take responsibility for their actions and that someone else will come behind them to straighten things out. When we constantly rescue them, they may come to believe that things will always work in their favor…and we ALL know that is NOT true!
Failure is not the end of the world. It’s a lesson. It is what makes us human. It’s an opportunity to make positive changes. I recently read an article from Empowering Parents about how to talk to your child about failing. It recommended calmly focusing the conversation on having your child address these three key questions:
What part did you play in this?
What are you going to do differently next time?
What did you learn from this?
Part of learning- for everyone- involves feeling the discomfort that comes from failure. As hard as it is, we have to try and appreciate the opportunity that results from it.

Looking for brotherhood and a strong sense of community? The St. Albert Men's Fellowship is just for you! The idea for the fellowship came about in 2022, when several parishioners began to get together informally to share ideas, opportunities and to sharpen one another in different ways. Over the year, the group has grown, and we're excited to formalize our gatherings at St. Albert, inviting all our parish brothers to come meet other like-minded men interested in forming strong friendships, deepening their faith, and participating in service. "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." Proverbs 17:17 Join the Fellowship on Thursday, March 7th 7:30pm in the Cafeteria for pizza, drinks, and some College Hoops on the TV! The group will be brainstorming ideas for future social gatherings and ways to get involved in parish life. If interested in attending, please click the link to fill out the form and tell us more about yourself. If you have any questions, please contact Nick Norcia at NLNorcia@gmail.com
