In this lesson, we explore how to find a reliable website. Research skills are critically important for students today. This lesson would be appropriate from Year 3 and up. The skills required should be starting to become independent by Year 5 and 6.
When we (adults) were young, we went to the newsagent, bought a published fold out fact card and wrote the information down, (sometimes in our own words!)
Our students today have more information at their fingertips than they could possibly need. The issue: most of it is false....well at least of questionable accuracy.
Explicitly teaching how to be a critical and more effective users of research tools is imperative. Remember, google doesn't answer questions, just as the library never answered questions. Google sorts and holds all the information for you and we need to learn the tools to navigate it. As we learned the Dewey Decimal System at the library, we need to learn the tools to find reliable information.
