In this lesson: We will explore the use of a graphic organiser to find out what the main idea of the text is. The main idea is a critical skill in reading comprehension. We are successful when we can identify the most important idea is. This can be done at varying levels, at a sentence level, a paragraph level, a chapter or the whole text.
Our thanks to Miss Fuentes for this lesson.
In this lesson, Mrs Mastroianni is exploring cause and effect. Cause and effect is an important comprehension skill, and it is one that can be quite simple at the surface level, but to dig deeper when analysing, it is quite complex. When reading a text, cause and effect can be continually looked at by asking why. The character is sad- that's an effect, what is the cause? It is important is it not overplayed when reading with a student, as you could investigate cause and effect into almost every event. It is encouraged that graphic organisers, such as a flow chart, are used when solving cause and effect. Thanks to Mrs Mastroianni for the lesson.
This lesson is about finding the main idea.
