Wherever we were or whatever we were doing on Wednesday's Remembrance Day, we stopped and observed the two minutes silence to remember those who have served and sacrificed. Usually, we all gather in the hall for this special moment, but we were determined it would be remembrance as usual even in these unusual times. Mrs Bachour started off our day with an online assembly, explaining why we remember and how Remembrance Day started to pay tribute to the fallen from WW I. We looked at the brave example of Noor Inayat Khan, a British spy during WW II who served in the Special Operations Executive. As an SOE agent she became the first female wireless operator to be sent from the UK into occupied France to aid the French Resistance. She made the ultimate sacrifice and was shot in Dachau concentration in 1944, after being betrayed and arrested. We will remember them.
(Top and middle): Year Six, Years Three and Four and Mr Downes, along with the rest of the school, paused for two minutes of reflection. (Bottom): Reception line up alongside brave Noor Inayat Khan, to paint a beautiful poppy-filled Remembrance Day wall hanging.
It's fair to say our Reception children are having a blast at the moment. The nights may be drawing in and there's a decided nip in the late Autumnal air, but they are rocketing to success with some Bonfire Night-inspired artwork. First up we have some stunning outdoor daubs, reminiscent of the late Jackson Pollock, but decidedly more sparkly, we give you an explosion of firework colour against the blackest of canvas nights. Then, it was on to some solo crafting, when they took on a tubular challenge to create their very own, dynamite-free rockets. Although they won't blast off, their colourful rigs cheer up these grey November days.
We are so thrilled to be back at St Stephen's! We believe drama is so important for children because it's a key part of developing confidence, listening skills and how to work as a team. This term, our Year One class has been working with Miss Beth and Miss Liv. They have used their imaginations to go on adventures to mystical and magical lands!
In Year Two drama club children have been learning to use their voices in silly and imaginative ways with Miss Amy. They have developed their speaking skills through a mixture of group and paired work.
Meanwhile, our Year Three actors has been working with Miss Beth, looking at a variety of scripts. So far they have performed Aladdin, Oliver Twist & Peter Rabbit! On to Year Four where Mr Danny takes centre stage. He's been getting the children to improvise quickly using scenario cards - some of them are very silly but also really good fun! Moving on to Year Five, where things have become a little spooky. Our young actors have been getting their fangs into some Halloween-themed scripts and devising their own plays with Miss Amy and Mr Danny. At the top of the school, our oldest thespians have been treading the boards in style, developing characters through voice, expression and movement. I have been working with Mr Danny on some incredibly focused work that will really help the children to perform both text and movement.
Drama classes at St Stephen's have never been busier and we love seeing the enthusiasm and excitement on the children's faces when our sessions begin. It is such a pleasure to run our clubs and we all look forward so much to working with the children each week. We have five remaining classes this term and children can join at any time. There are very limited spaces in: Year 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6.
