Our SRVUSD students give us so many reasons to be proud, and last week Monte Vista senior, Daphne Milich, gave us one more. Milich was named as one of two first-ever student members on the Contra Costa County Board of Education. Sophia Nguyen from El Cerrito High School was also named.
Their selection underscores the desire for student voice on the county board. “Prioritizing student voice is a priority for me and the Contra Costa County Board of Education,” said Board President Consuelo Lara. “This will give us an opportunity to embrace the perspectives and insights of the students we serve through the voice of our student members.” The first meeting with student members took place last Wednesday, September 13th.
Milich, an involved and engaged student, will bring a unique perspective to this role. She is an advocate for homeless students in Contra Costa County and at Monte Vista serves as the WASC Campus Culture representative and holds a seat on MV’s new Student Diversity & Equity Leadership Council. She also enjoys participating in competitive Mock Trial. These positions give Milich a vital lens into the well-being of students on campus and students’ sense of fulfillment in their on-campus experience. They also help her understand what changes students might like to see. "As I begin my term as a student board member, I look forward to bringing light to issues that may be easily overlooked by those outside of the student population and continuing the goal of making Contra Costa County schools a place where everyone can feel welcome," shared Milich.
Students like Milich underscore the need to empower all SRVUSD students by seeking out and valuing their voice and input. To this end, SRVUSD added a student board member position three years ago to better understand and meet the needs of our district students. The position has proven to be a valuable addition and a means of direct connection to student priorities and perspectives. “Creating space to hear directly from students is an imperative outlined in our Strategic Directions,” said Superintendent Dr. John Malloy, “and it’s a key component of maintaining safe, welcoming environments so that all of our students can thrive.”
We congratulate Daphne Milich on her student board member position on the Contra Costa County Board of Education. Our district is so proud of her impact at Monte Vista, and we look forward to the positive influence she will have at the county level. Not surprisingly, Daphne’s future plans include pursuing a career in law, but no matter what she chooses to do, we have no doubt that she will leave her mark on this world and will continue to do great things!
