Open Middle Questions
Open middle problems follow a very specific structure. Students start with a closed beginning – which means they all start with the same problem to solve. They also end with a closed ending – meaning everyone is searching for the same answer. But the way to find the answer – the middle part – is open, meaning there are many different ways to solve the problem. Quite often these types of questions are about optimization; an answer can be found fairly simply, and complexity can be increased by asking students to find the best answer possible.
