EAL students' language progress is tracked through the Common Framework of Reference (CFR). This criterion-referenced tool is used throughout Saskatchewan and is a requirement from the Ministry of Education. Other tools may be used to measure skills other than language acquisition, but teachers should consider a student's ability to understand the language of the test. Standardized tests are almost always normed for English-speaking students and may not measure EAL students' true abilities.
