Benchmark Screeners - Which students are at risk?
Evidence-based screening is the most effective way to identify struggling and at-risk readers. It is an objective and measurable way to improve student outcomes and reduce bias in assessment. Acadience early reading screening is a process of assessing student’s foundational reading in the early years of school. It involves administering a series of measures to identify students who may be at-risk for reading difficulties.
If students do not meet benchmark cut offs, teachers will administer a diagnostic assessment that will guide instruction by indicating specific skills and strategies that a student needs to learn.
Struggling readers do not have time for a “wait and see” approach. Weekly or biweekly progress monitoring allows for
enough data to quickly and clearly establish patterns.
Assessment for learning plays a critical role in informaing and driving literayc instruction. Structured literacy and a comprehensive assessment system must go hand in hand to allow educators to adjust instruction to meet the specific needs of students.
