GOOD VIBES EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH...

Shannon Clayton, Platteview Central Junior High School, Science

Congratulations to our SPCS Good Vibes Employee of the Month, Mrs. Shannon Clayton! Mrs. Clayton started working for Springfield Platteview Community Schools in 2014. She began her journey with SPCS as an English teacher at Platteview High School, but she missed teaching science. In 2017, Mrs. Clayton moved over to Platteview Central where she currently teaches 7th-grade science and has built up the  junior high HAL program (among other great things). She was nominated for Employee of the Month in February, and we are proudly honoring her hard work and dedication!

"Mrs. Clayton is a masterful teacher. She is so good with our students and builds outstanding, trusting relationships. Her lessons are terrific and her energy is off the charts. In addition, she is passionate about High Ability students and has built a wonderful HAL program to support this segment of our student body. On top of that, she is our MSAP supervisor, working with struggling students after school on most school days. Her wisdom, charisma, and devotion to our school are unparalleled! Mrs. Clayton deserves this recognition."

Katie Susman, Westmont Elementary School Counselor, Receives "Citizenship Education Award"

Local VFW posts ask area principals to write essays on staff members that have gone above and beyond to develop great citizens. An essay submission about Mrs. Susman's work, written by Westmont's Principal Mrs. Melissa Hasty, won the district and the state award. The VFW post had a dinner honoring the winners. Mrs. Susman was also recognized at Westmont Elementary in front of the entire school! Congratulations to Mrs. Susman. Thank you for everything you do for our kids at Westmont Elementary. And many thanks to Mrs. Hasty for the beautifully written essay.

Fossil found on land owned by SPCS Teacher, Mrs. Arlis Scanlan

A fossilized mastodon (ice age elephant) jaw was found on land owned by Mrs. Arlis Scanlan, a 7th-grade reading teacher at Platteview Central, in December 2022. The fossil was carefully excavated and then donated to Morrill Hall, at the University of Nebraska, for research purposes. As part of the donation agreement, Morrill Hall waived the admission fee for 91 seventh graders to view the fossil. The seventh-grade class went on a field trip to Morrill Hall on Friday, February 24th. The students had an incredible time!

"National History Day" Projects for 8th-Grade Students

Students at Platteview Central Junior High Present National History Day Projects in Advisory, March 1 - 7

Over the next two weeks, Andrew Soneson's eighth-grade history students will be showing off an important project they started at the beginning of the fall. Mr. Soneson, a social studies teacher at PC since 2014, has had his eight-grade students at Platteview Central (PC) do this style of National History Day projects for the last five years.

These projects start in September. Students start by brainstorming multiple topic ideas and creating a topic/research proposal/historical question that they submitted to Mr. Soneson for approval. Students used the library, websites, documentaries, and primary sources to create and research note cards. Some students were allowed to combine projects into group projects if their topics fit together well. Then students developed a thesis statement. After that, they had to choose a project type (museum exhibit, website, 6 - 10 page essay, 6 - 10 minute documentary, or 6 - 10 minute live historical performance) and put it all together.
