High value products from local fish, farm and forest "waste"
3F Waste Recovery is an innovative pre-commercial business that turns waste challenges in the fishery, farming and forestry industries into profitable solutions. Our goal is to become the regional leader for environmental stewardship, full product utilization and manufacturing innovation.
Our first phase of products are manufactured from the Atlantic cod waste stream (or "by-product" as we prefer to call it) generated by primary processors in Newfoundland and Labrador. We anticipate beginning pilot scale production of cod collagen and protein powders this fall. When our plant is fully operational, we will divert more than 5000 metric tons of organic waste from landfills per year and generate more than $20M per year in additional value to the raw materials per year that we recover from provincial processors.
3F has formed a partnership company, Marine Scientific Ltd. together with a provincial processor who shares in the belief that the fishery of the future is one where "we make more money from the same amount of fish", one of 3F's commitments to stewardship and sustainability in the wild fishery. Marine Scientific is a marine feedstock supply company that focuses on consolidating fisheries by-products at economically feasible volumes for distribution to marine ingredient manufacturers like 3F.
3F has invented a full scale functional prototype mechanical fish composter. It is a semi-automated solution that can compost up to 15mt/year at a cost savings of approximately 75% compared to manual composting of the same volume. This project was funded in part by a $15,000 grant from the Multimaterials Service Board (MMSB) and an $7,000 grant from NRC-IRAP in partnership with the College of the North Atlantic. The composter will be going into trials this summer in partnership with the Northern Peninsula Regional Services Board (NorPen).
This summer, 3F, formed Zero Waste Farms in partnership with Mike's Farm of Hawke's Bay, is going into pilot scale production trials of lanolin extracted from sheep wool aimed at supplying the local cosmetic, soap and candle artisans of NL and their existing products and markets. This project is also generously funded by an $8,000 grant from MMSB.
