What I did
I started working on making the book with the materials I bought. With the help of my mentor, I made the first few pages of my book. I cut holes in each page so that the I could effectively place the textures only in the places that should be touched. I also decided to place the words at the bottom of the book so that it is easier to find where each drawing and writing is. I started with adding the textures of the cave. I used the rough textured clay and added clear manicure so that it would not fall apart. For the cat, I cut one of my clothes to give the soft texture. Since the fur kept falling off, I burnt the edges of the cat so it would stay in place. As I was testing the materials I bought, I made some corrections of the storyboard so that it could match the textures that I was using.
What I learned
I learned from my mentor the new materials I could use and how to cut and add the materials. When adding the materials, I found out that I should cut a hole in the paper and add the objects, for example the knitted bag on the inside of the paper so it doesn't look dirty on the outside. I also found it important that all the materials added to the book stays in place. I could use manicures and laminating sheets to put everything together. As I was talking to my mentor, I also found out that this book I make may be used for mothers who are visually impaired with children who do not have this problem, so I should use more color and designs in the book. For this case, I also thought it was important for the children to see the drawings while the mother is reading, so I decided to add the drawings on the top and the writings and braille at the bottom.
What I need to do next
I need to try writing the words of my book. Different handwritings give different moods and I need to find the best style of writing for my book. I also have to find the fitting color on each page. I am thinking of making the writings with markers that have broad chisel tips. It is more easier to read and it creates the comfortable mood. Since the writing is in Korean and children are reading it, I have to add more onomatopoeias.
