Day 9: Magnolia's Ice Cream & More, October 9, 2013

In the middle of a residential area, stands Magnolia's Ice Cream & More. There were a few benches and tables outside. Inside a television played Nickelodeon. The shop was also a convenience store, selling a variety of snack foods.

They offered about 12 flavors of ice cream, Italian ice, and fruit ice cream, served in a variety of popular Mexican dishes. They were very helpful in explaining their flavors, providing free samples, and explaining the many different available presentations. I tried the mango, pineapple, cantaloupe, and lemon Italian ice. All were very delicious, but their mango is their best seller and it was also the favorite in my books. The cantaloupe was a close second; pineapple third!

I ordered the Mango Deluxe for $3.79. A good value for all the fruit used in the dish!

It was topped with fresh mango fruit, chamoy sauce, a lime, a dash of chili pepper, salt, and a straw coated in a chamoy paste.

The fruit ice cream was packed full of mango flavor. It had consistency of a typical ice cream, without the creamy, dairy flavor. It was sweet, but not overly so. It was balanced out by the spiciness of the chamoy. Although the ice cream was good, some bites, especially near the bottom had stringy fibers from the mango. At least you know it was made with real fruit!

Chamoy is a savory sauce prepared from pickled fruit. Chili powder and other spices are also added to give the sauce a sweet, salty, and spicy taste. This sauce was drizzled over the top of the mango ice cream.

The fresh fruit slices on top were very generous and added positively to the dish. With all of the fruit on top, you had to work some to ensure some of the fruit was saved for the last few bites!

There was also a small plastic straw coated with a chamoy paste. I took a few bites of of paste, It tasted almost like a thick fruit jam with spice mixed in. Although good in flavor, I wasn't able to eat a whole lot of it.

It definitely was a new ice cream experience for me. If you have grown up eating the dairy based style ice cream, I definitely recommend branching out and trying Magnolia's fruit ice cream. Make sure you go in with an open mind and try the savory combination of fruit and spice! If this is what you are accustomed, why didn't you recommend it sooner!

I forgot to take a picture! :( But I borrowed one from their Facebook.
