Alas, the adventure begins! Day 1: Fat Cat Creamery @ Black Hole Coffee, October 1, 2013

I was able to walk to this location, a positive for me. Black Hole Coffee is a typical coffee shop, over packed with students, writers to be, and all lovers of coffee. They had plenty of seating inside and out. Walking into the shop, I was a little worried, as there was no ice cream listed on the menu. I inquired whether they offered any ice cream, and the employee went back to check. He returned with a handful of individual ice cream cups, including strawberry, milk chocolate stout, pistachio, and Mexican vanilla. I chose the milk chocolate stout.

The container was approximately a cup in size and cost $4.00. I would consider the price to be fair for the quality and quantity of ice cream received. On the side of the cardboard container all of the ingredients were listed: whole milk, cream, stout, egg yolks, milk chocolate, sugar, and Mexican vanilla. The beer used was Convict Hill Oatmeal Stout. It is brewed by Independence Brewery in Austin, and the beer has a high rating on beer advocate. They also advertised the milk and eggs being local.

The ice cream was stored a little too cold; I had to wait a few minutes before I was able to dig in with my spork. (Yes, they offered plastic sporks!) The initial taste had a nice, strong stout taste that was well balanced with the chocolate. As I continued to enjoy the ice cream, on subsequent bites the stout started to become less prevalent and the chocolate flavor began to dominate. At the end of the day, overall I was very happy with the dish and appreciated the use of local ingredients. Although I have seen several variations of alcohol infused ice cream, Fat Cat Creamery was able to do so very successfully and delivered a well balanced ice cream treat.

It was a great start to the fun.
