Day 10: Another double day! October 10, 2013

Sweet Cup Gelato

Along Montrose Avenue across from St. Thomas University sits Sweet Cup Gelato. Half coffee shop/half ice cream store, it is a nice quite, relaxing atmosphere. They offer a wide variety of gelato, yogurt, custard, and sorbets, about 20 different varieties on hand. When I was ordering, the worker asked me if it was for dine in or to go, which seemed odd, but then I quickly discovered that the dine-in customers receive their ice cream in a real bowl and silverware. I ended up ordering Triple C custard and Granizado gelato. It cost about $4.20. (To be confirmed, I forgot to write down the price!) The dish was served with a triangular waffle piece.

The Triple C custard features coconut, cardamom, and cream. The custard was packed full of small, flaky coconut pieces. It was an unusual contrast with the smooth, creamy texture. The coconut pieces themselves were The cardamom flavor was unique, adding a strong lingering aftertaste and a distinct smell to the ice cream. It would have been difficult to each a larger serving of the Triple C due to the intense spice and flavor.

The Granizado gelato was dulce de leche w/ chocolate chips. The carmalization of the milk offered an extremely sweet flavor. There were only a few chocolate chips spread throughout, but they added a nice balance to the dish. Similar to the other flavor, the smaller quantity was a good portion size. Any more may have been too much.

The piece of waffle was a nice garnish to provide the fun of a cone without all the mess or excess amount of waffle. It was on the sweet side and had a solid crunch.

Overall I enjoyed the Granizado to the Triple C, but they were both fun, unique flavors. If I was a bigger fan of coffee, I would return with a good book, drink some coffee, and finish it off with something new from their rotating menu of ice cream flavors! (They offer a Blue Moon Sorbet; it looked very tasty on their Facebook!)

Stop #2, Wendy's

A quick mention, I stopped at Wendy's and ordered a small, chocolate Frosty for $1.07. It's weird to think that Wendy's has expanded their dessert menu to include vanilla, mix-ins, shakes, etc. within the past seven years. The original Frosty remains an ice cream classic. For me, I enjoy the Frosty as it begins to melt, and gets that smooth texture. While not the highest quality dessert, it's a great value and sure to bring back fond childhood memories, (unless you missed out!)
