Day 8: Cricket's Creamery & Caffe, October 8, 2013

Nestled along 19th St in the Heights, Cricket's Creamery is in the middle of some interesting shops, but most of them close at 6 PM (except the new Torchy's). I inquired about the hours and they mentioned that they are considering staying open later in the future. Hopefully they do soon!

The cafe looked like it had some delicious, healthy food choices. On a future trip, I will definitely sample it!

There were a few couches, chalk board, and a few small chairs, toys for children. There was also an outdoor seating patio and a raised, seating outlook at the front of the cafe.

The staff was incredibly friendly, immediately offering free samples. I tried the Cookies & Cream and Mexican Standoff. There were about 12 flavors. They were very quick to share that the ice cream was prepared fresh in the store and inquired what sorts of other new flavors I wanted to see.

I ordered a single scoop, half pumpkin and half Mexican Standoff. It cost $3.19. A fair price for the scoop.

To put it bluntly: the gelato had wonderful flavor!

First the pumpkin: 'tis the season! It had a wonderful, creamy texture, strong pumpkin flavor, and pecans intermittently mixed through the ice cream. The gelato wasn't overly sweet or heavy.

As good as the pumpkin flavor was, the Mexican Standoff was even better. It featured vanilla gelato with pecans and homemade praline sauce. There were much more pecans compared to the pumpkin. The praline sauce was very sweet, a bit much on it's own. But when you ate it with the gelato, the flavor balanced out and it.

I was a little worried that I had reached the best on Saturday at Connie's, but Cricket's came through with flying colors! The unique flavors, friendly staff, and charming atmosphere made it worth the visit. Hopefully they expand their hours to be more friendly for after work visits!

I am excited to see what else Houston has to offer!
