Day 5, Connie's Frozen Custard, October 5, 2013

Before traveling here, I had some mixed expectations about this stop. First they only offer 2 flavors: chocolate and vanilla. Also it was quite the drive for me. Finally they advertise the custard is made fresh every hour from a recipe over 59 years old. It was sure to be an interesting trip!

Connie's is conveniently located on the way to The Showboat Drive In Theater. So it made a nice detour on the way out to see two movies for a cheap, cheap price!

Upon pulling up to the shop, it had the look of a good, local hangout. A giant ice cream sign, a bright yellow building, a drive thru window, and a few benches out front, there were high exceptions getting out of the car.

The offer cones, shakes, sundaes, concretes (like a blizzard), and floats. Although they only offer the two flavors, they have about 35 different toppings. I ended up going with a 12 oz. pretzel caramel crunch concrete. It cost about $4.50.

Although there were two very large menu boards, there wasn't one right by the counter where you ordered. Not a huge complaint, but it is sometimes nice to refer to during an order.

The service was incredibly fast. After ordering, I had the treat in my hands within 30 seconds.

First the ice cream (well custard!). The taste was incredible. The fact that it was made fresh made a huge difference! The ice cream had a rich, creamy flavor; not overly sweet, dense; and strong vanilla flavor.

The caramel was a good compliment. The sides of the cup were swirled with it. It was also well mixed throughout.

The pretzels were thin, crunchy, and the typical shape. The crunchy texture and salty flavor balanced well with the sweet, creamy custard.

My friend ended up ordering chocolate custard with marshmallow blended in. Although it was good, I felt the vanilla custard had a better overall flavor.

Connie's was so delicious that I half-heatedly contemplated stopping my ice cream quest and just return every day! But I must continue and see if any other location will be able to top it. I look forward to going back in the future to try something new.
