Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) is committed to prepare an earthquake business continuity plan.
Zamboanga Peninsula had already experienced an intensity 7.8 earthquake which devastated Zamboanga City and nearby areas in Mindanao in 1897 and 1976. Around 10,000 people were killed in the Zamboanga peninsula when the tsunami hit on August 17, 1976. In Pagadian City alone, 49,848 people were left homeless in the aftermath.
The possibility of a strong earthquake recurring is very likely.
There are two earthquake generators or active trenches in Mindanao, the Sulu and Cotabato trenches. The trenches that surround Zamboanga Peninsula have the tendency to displace vertically instead of just horizontally. When these trenches move causing earthquakes, not only powerful, devastating ground-shaking occurs, but the dreaded tsunami will be the consequence as well. Tsunami is inherent to a vertical displacement of the trenches.
Since Zamboanga City Medical Center is located in Zamboanga City catering to the health of the population of Zamboanga Peninsula, with a strong earthquake likely to occur again in the future, it is but proper to develop a ZCMC Earthquake Business Continuity Plan to set out how the business of ZCMC will operate following a strong earthquake and how it expects to return to “business as usual” in the quickest possible time afterwards. Hence, this project to develop a ZCMC Earthquake Business Continuity Plan.
