You receive the following email from a close friend who suspects that he/she is being a victim of identity theft, something that you went through only a couple of months ago.

Hello my dear friend,

I am contacting you because I’m really concerned about an issue that is keeping me awake at night. The thing is that I am convinced that my personal information has been compromised in a data breach. I can’t say for sure how, but I guess my email login was somehow accessed and through that they managed to reach my bank details and were then able to make online purchases. I know something of the kind happened to you very recently and I would appreciate it if you could give me some advice.

Kind regards,

Your friend

While surfing the web, you find this article from an online newspaper:

Should everyone become vegetarian?

With ethical diets on the increase among people, we want to know about what you eat and why it matters politically.

In our “Virgin vegan” series, we listen to what people and first-time voters have to say about the issues that matter most to them. With increasing numbers of citizens supporting the Green party and environmental causes, we want to ask you about your attitude towards meat. Is the consumption of meat sustainable in the long-term? Is it healthy? Should governments pass laws enforcing meat consumption regulations?

‘Everyone should cut down on meat – western meat-eating levels are unsustainable’

I’m 19 and a philosophy student at University College London (UCL). I am a vegan and my decision was an ethical one. I wanted to avoid killing animals just because I wanted – rather than needed – to eat them. I moved from being vegetarian to vegan as I realised that vegetarianism does little in terms of animal rights - people tend to up their dairy intake as vegetarians, and the dairy industry is filled with cruelty. It’s hard to justify the meat and dairy industries as they currently stand, because the animals are treated badly, and unless you have the money, it’s hard to obtain ethically sourced meat. Everyone should cut down on their meat consumption, as current western meat-eating levels are at an unsustainable level.

You read the article below in a local paper:

Book day – a bummer!

Are you one of those who think that the council wastes a lot of money when it comes to promote “cultural activities”? Keep reading and have a look at what happened some weeks ago! Last month’s book day didn’t get much attention from our neighbours, it didn’t manage to appeal to young people, and didn’t bring anything we could think as fascinating. In fact, most neighbours said it was deadly dull. I totally agree with them as it was the same old story, they bring poor talents that don’t put in much new or different. In a nutshell, I think it was a complete hoax! In my view, there are many other things the council could spend OUR money on, instead of wasting it on something that only benefits a small number of people. Don’t you agree with me?

You decide to write a letter to the editor, explaining your opinion on the topic (150 – 200 words).

BRIGHTON OLD TOWN TRAFFIC IMPROVEMENT PROPOSALS

The aim of this consultation is to seek the opinion of the people who live or own a business in picturesque Brighton Old Town. We have two different proposals for improving traffic management in the area.

1. RESTRICTIONS. During working hours, access will be restricted to residents and businesses, and controlled with barriers, CCTV cameras and permits. Through-traffic will decrease because all other vehicles will be limited to evenings and Sundays.

2. CHARGES. A Monday-Friday £10 congestion charge will guarantee access between 8am and 6pm, while reducing the volume of through-traffic. Residents’ permits will cost £100/year, while businesses will pay £500/year for parking permits.

If you are a business owner or a resident of Brighton Old Town, contact johncampbell@brighton-hove.gov.uk let us know which proposal you favour. We’d love to know what you think.
