Karen was born on April 20, 1956 and died November 17th, 1973 in a car accident. People remember her as a vibrant, engaged young person. Somewhat 'tomboy'ish, partly as rebellion against cultural gender identity and partly as a country girl, she had a curious and wide ranging intellect. She loved to read and explore far-flung ideas.
As the youngest member of the William Beecher household, and the only daughter, Karen became the treasured center of attention to Vera McCabe, who came to the Beecher house on 82nd Street first as a "nanny", then as a cook, and finally as a family member. Vera doted over Karen and protected her from her rough brothers.
When the family moved to Cornwall, Connecticut in 1967, Karen attended the Cornwall Consolidated School from which she graduated and moved to Housatonic Valley Regional High School.
Karen learned about horses in Cornwall, tending the stables at the "Day Mansion" owned by John and Joyce Nichols. She was friends with Dody Clark and assisted her in her stables and they rode together.
Karen was killed when the car she was riding in hit a tree in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Bill and Lori never fully recovered from the grief of loosing Karen.
