John Beecher was born on Sept. 5, 1722. His father was also named John Beecher and his mother was Mehitable Tuttle.
John Beecher was know in New Haven harbor as "Captain John" . He married Mary Wilmot. They had nine children. The second born was Eli Beecher in 1748, when "Captain John" 26 years old. The third son was named Thaddius, born one year later in 1749. In 1760 Captain John Beecher bought the Exchange Building at the corner of Church and Chapel Streets. His other son, Thaddius, inherited the building and it became his place of business and home. He planted an Elm sapling at the corner of Green, which shaded the town pump. This Elm will be referred to in the 1890 obituary of Benjamin Beecher who was his brother, Eli's, grandson.
Captain John died Nov. 22, 1793 at the age of 71.
