For those who are not familiar with the Daily 5, a program created by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser, please familiarize yourself with their philosophy on how to design a meaningful literacy block that incorporates all of the components of Balanced Literacy. In its simplest form, Daily 5 replaces some of those lackluster center activities with word work and writing that are all situated within the context of reading. Students spend the bulk of their time reading to themselves, reading with others, and listening to fluent and expressive reading. With practice, students slowly build their stamina to read and write for longer periods of time.
To successfully implement these elements in the classroom requires careful modeling and reinforcement, whereby each element of the Daily 5 is strategically introduced in isolation prior to building upon the next. Please review this extremely useful guide on how to kick start the Daily 5 over the first 20 days of school. Sometimes taking the slow-and-steady approach works best!
