Closing Up After A Visit

Here are notes for securing the main cottage house:
1. Water Heater: Shut down breaker labeled WH top right
2. Water:
a. If expected freezing weather, shut off the main water valve under the hose valve <need further details here>.
b. Crack the outside hose valves near the back porch to let the water in the house drain.
To assist, crack the hot and cold valves in the 2nd floor bath sink.
3. Pack up refrigerator with perishables – anything that will not last a month and take with you.
4. Inspect Microwave and Refrigerator for spills and clean up if needed.
5. Empty waste paper baskets throughout cottage and kitchen garbage. Put in outside trashcan with large plastic bag and secure with lid. If not secured, rats or raccoons will pilfer.
6. Put trashcans within wood shed behind house.
7. Set Thermostat to 50 degs in the winter if freezing is expected, shut off in summer.
8. Ensure upstairs heater is off, and then shut off breaker in circuit panel.
9. Ensure all doors and locks are secured including annex areas. Check to be sure keys are back in designation place for other to access.
10. Check all window locks and ensure they are latched.
11. Pull all blinds and curtains closed.
12. Police the yard for trash or brush near the buildings. Rake brush away at least 10 feet around buildings – for fire.
13. In winter, store outdoor furniture in second wood shed or underneath the deck.
14. Check the network is up so the Ring camera remains active.
15. Say so long Westwood, our beloved family place.

You normally receive a postcard from the county to prompt us to have the septic inspected. You share the card with me and I'll get it done.
The filters on the pump should be done annually unless the pressure slows. Then we do it immediately or more often. They have to be ordered and I have that service done as well. Late summer early fall I believe was last year.
I have the guest house chimney done each Oct or November. And you add on the main house normally. But not this last year 2021. (Best to do ourselves - Merle's Masonary 360-378-5357.)
