In order to evaluate the limits of mobility and the effects of a potential subway system in Venice, we have created two tools this term. Firstly, we created an isochrone generator. This is a tool that takes in an origin point and amount of time, and displays the area around the origin that a person can get to within that amount of time by walking or using public transportation. For ours, this area is displayed by a grid of red squares that get lighter in color as the time that it takes to get to a point increases. We are able to generate these isochrones for both the current transportation system and the transportation system as if a subway was already a part of it.
Next, we created a tool that displays the directions and amount of time it takes to go between any specific origin and destination. With this, a user can also input if they would like to view this information with or without a subway system. This is particularly useful in evaluating effects of the subway system on travel between particular points of interest.
We hope that these tools can be used in the future to assist in the possible creation of a subway system in Venice. You can take a look at visuals produced by these tools below:
