Rolls-Royce, a well-known car manufacturer, is diving into the autonomous boating industry. They believe that autonomous boats will play a huge role in maritime shipping. They realize that the world has entered this “smart” era, and they think they can fill the opening for “smart ships.” Rolls-Royce is leading the “Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications (AAWA) Initiative.” This is a 6.6-million-euro project. The main goal of the initiative is to gather the appropriate minds and make autonomous ships a reality. They have developed qualitative conclusions so far. The more technical and quantitative conclusions are in the works, and certain concept designs are expected by the end of 2017. A key conclusion is that the autonomy and user-control will have to depend on the situation. There are situations where full autonomy will be ideal and other situations where interruptions are more likely; user-control might be more ideal in these situations. One challenge in making the boats a reality, besides the design and technological implementation, is the extensive legislation that must be passed
