Venice lies along the major A4 autostrada, which runs east-west through northern Italy and serves such cities as Turin, Milan, and Verona. Since the A4 serves as a partial beltway around the Venice-Mestre metropolitan area, cars hoping to travel to Venice from either direction need to exit A4 onto the A57 autostrada, which travels closer to Venice. These cars are then instructed to follow signs for the historic City “Venezia – Centro Storico”, which will lead them to exit the A57 onto the Via della Liberta, which continues into the Ponte della Liberta, which connects Mestre to the historic center of Venice.
In order to preserve Venice’s historic character, cars are not allowed in any part of the city, with the exception of the transportation hub there, where they are directed to park. Two options exist for cars hoping to park in Venice: a public garage on the Piazzale Roma, which costs between €23.40 and €29 per day, and the private garage on Tronchetto, which contains 4,800 parking spaces and a lot for oversized campers, and charges €21 per day. It is substantially cheaper to park in the mainland of Mestre, with a public lot in San Giuliano charging €12 per day to those hoping to park there.
