Deliverables

Most of our work can be seen on the website Venipedia.org. This site is a wiki-style encyclopedia all about Venice for the English-speaking world. The first page we created is the Churches page about the churches of Venice, which can be seen below:

From the Churches page, you can find links to the 139 Church pages we have automatically produced through the City Knowledge Console after working with the Venipedia team to create a template for each church page. The CK Console allowed us to make all the pages at once and allows for easy changes to the page layout. Our Venipedia pages focus on providing specific information that is unavailable on other online sources. An example of a Church page can be seen below:

In addition to a Venipedia page for every church in Venice, after organizing all of the information regarding the artifacts within the floors of some of the churches, we created 2221 pages for each church floor artifact. After working closely with the Venipedia team to create a template for the artifact pages, we have used the City Knowledge Console to automatically generate all 2221 Venipedia pages. Our Venipedia pages focus on providing specific information that is unavailable on other online sources, such as the size and location of the artifacts, as well as some translations of artifact inscriptions. Additionally, an image of an artifact page can be seen below:

We have also created an equation which allows for a combination of the different types of damage into one overall damage score. This score can be seen on each artifacts' page. This single score per artifact allowed to break the artifacts in 5 different "bins" of damage: Excessive, High, Intermediate, Low and Minimal Damage. The excessive and minimal damage "bins" were disregarded since they were deemed either too damaged to salvage any text or in a condition that did not require attention. The distribution can be be seen on the graph below, with a lower score representing an artifact with less damage.

A more in-depth explanation of the damage assessment of each artifact and what types of artifacts can be found in the floors of churches can be found on the Church Floor Artifacts page. An image of this page can be seen below:

The Churches page, Church Floor Artifacts page, 139 church pages, and 2221 artifact pages all add up to 2462 pages created in Venipedia by our team. In addition to the large number of Venipedia pages created, the following graphic was created from the scores we assigned to the artifacts. It shows that the Church of Santi Apostoli is in dire need of artifact restoration has it has a high number of floor artifacts in the high damage category, as seen below:

Even though Santi Apostoli has a very high need for restoration, we produced a list of church we think should be restored immediately. These churches can be seen in the graph below:

The churches with the highest bars are the ones in need of the most help. These churches include: APOS, Santi Apostoli, CAPP, Le Cappuccine, GREC, San Giorgio dei Greci, LUCA, San Luca, POLO, San Paolo Apostolo, and RENE, Santissimo Redentore.

In addition to the graph of the floor damage per church, we also looked at the relationship between the height of the church floor and its damage. In the figure below, the blue line represents the height of the floor while the bars represent the damage of the floor. A general trend can be seen with lower floors (on the left) being more damaged than those that are higher (on the right).
