Health Insurance:
The following information was collected from Michele Anderson, Family Assistance Center Coordinator for South Dakota:
Below, and in the ASR Documents section of this website, you will find two forms. The first one, entitled, "09_TRS.doc," provides instructions for setting up Tricare Reserve Select when on regular "non active" Guard duty. You will want to use this if you have more than one month before your ASR active duty orders become effective. Tricare Reserve Select is also beneficial once you have completed the 3 years of your ASR program. This is true, because National Guard insurance is relatively inexpensive compared to the insurance that the medical school provides.
The second form, entitled, "Enrolling_into_TPR_ADOS_AGR.doc" is the document with instructions on setting up Tricare Prime Remote. Tricare Prime Remote is the insurance program for active duty soldiers who reside outside of a military medical facility.
The Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) must be updated with your orders before your active duty coverage becomes effective. Your recruiter should work with state officials to ensure that this occurs in a timely manner. Orders must be 30+ days for you and your dependents to be eligible for Tricare coverage. The ASR program issues orders for 1 year, so this shouldn't be a problem.
Assuming you have completed your paperwork and it has been processed correctly, active duty health coverage will be in effect on day one of your ASR orders.
For further information, please see the Useful Websites section of this website. The links that are classified as healthcare will be very helpful in choosing your physician or contacting TriWest, the regional servicer of Tricare Prime Remote.
