Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
The Shands & VA Coronary Care Unit (CCU) rotation lasts for 2 weeks at UF Health and 2 or 4 weeks at the VA. The Shands location is the 7th floor of the East Tower. At the VA, it is combined with the MICU. During the rotation, team members have an opportunity to learn various cardiac critical care procedures under the direct supervision of the CCU attending or fellow. Patients seen on the UFH & VAMC CCU Service include patients admitted to the CCU from the ED, patients transferred from an internal medicine service, and patients transferred to UFH/VAMC from outside hospitals.
Shands Intensive Care Unit
The UFH Intensive Care Units (MICU) specialize in the care of critically ill patients from a wide spectrum of medical and neurologic etiologies. Conditions cared for in the MICU include but are not limited to sepsis, acute hypoxia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, acid-base imbalances, GI bleeds, liver and renal failure, acute strokes, status epilepticus, and coma. MICU rotations are 2-4 weeks in length. Resident schedule and call on the rotation is further described under the "Medical Intensive Care Unit" tab. MICU Residents are exempt from Morning Report, but are required to attend ICU Conferences.

Interns/Residents may also participate in procedures such as thoracenteses and paracenteses.
VA Intensive Care Unit
The VA Intensive Care Units (MICU) specialize in the care of critically ill patients from a wide spectrum of medical and neurologic etiologies. Conditions cared for in the VA MICU are similar to those described above in the Shands ICU. MICU rotations are 2-4 weeks in length, and the unit is staffed with four residents (PGY-2s/PGY-3s). There are no continuity clinics during this rotation. Each resident will have up to 5 nights during their two weeks. An MICU resident is expected to respond to all ERTs and codes, and one MICU resident is also expected to staff the ICU at all times.
The VA Chief Resident makes all ICU rotation schedules and special requests may/may not be accommodated. MICU residents are exempt from Morning Report, but are required to attend ICU Conferences.
The residents work closely with the Pulmonary/Critical Care attending and fellow during this rotation, and have the opportunity to perform procedures such as CVL and arterial line placement under the direct supervision of the attending or fellow. They may also participate in procedures such as thoracenteses and paracenteses.
