Shands Transplant ID Consults (Senior Residents ONLY)
Residents may choose to spend two weeks on the Transplant ID consult service. Residents will see patients who have undergone or are listed for solid organ transplantation with infectious disease issues. Residents will see new consults and follow previously seen patients on a daily basis. The resident will have autonomy to see patients, perform the history and physical exam, and then present the patient on rounds. They will attend the Infectious Diseases Clinic on Wednesday mornings with Drs. Gupte and Schain, unless there is a scheduling conflict or the Transplant ID Service requires their presence at Shands for patient care. The Shands ID clinic is held at the same time as Renal Transplant Clinic and just before Liver Transplant Clinic. As a result, many solid organ transplant patients are seen simultaneously in ID and Transplant clinics.
Shands ID Consults
The Residents will see one to two new consults per day and follow-up patients previously seen. The resident will have autonomy to see the patient, perform the history and physical exam, and then perform a literature search on the topic. Then the resident will present the patient on rounds to the attending and team. The consult team will see the patient at the bedside and have bedside teaching. Then the team, including the resident, can decide on treatment options. Residents will attend the UFH Infectious Disease clinic on Wednesday mornings with Drs. Schain, Gupte, and Islam, unless there is a scheduling conflict or the ID Service requires their presence at UFH for patient care.
VA ID Consults - Now a VA Selective
Residents will see one or two new consults per day and follow up patients previously seen. The resident will have autonomy to see the patient, perform the history and physical exam, and then perform a literature search on the topic. Then the resident will present the patient on rounds to the attending and team. The consult team will see the patient at the bedside and have bedside teaching. Then the team, including the resident, can decide on treatment options. Residents will attend the VA Infectious Disease Clinic on Thursday mornings, unless there is a scheduling conflict or the ID service requires their presence for inpatient care.
Infectious Disease Educational Conferences* (subject to change):
Each month a cycle of 12 interactive sessions on basic ID topics is completed by the faculty (antibiotics and 2, fever, respiratory infections, CNS infections, CV infections, ENT infections, GI infections, GU infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, and HIV/HIV-related infections).
Clinical Case Conference, first and second Tuesdays 8:30 a.m., ARB R2-133; third Tuesday housestaff noon conference (ID presentation); and, fourth Tuesday joint clinical case conference with the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology 8:30 a.m., ARB R2-265
ID Lecture Series, Fridays 8:30 a.m., ARB R2-133 including journal club (depending on the schedule).
*Residents are still required to attend their continuity clinic, housestaff noon conference and department conferences unless approval is granted to attend the above conferences through direct communication with the Chief resident.
