Shands Endocrine Consults
The Shands Endocrine rotation is a two-week rotation. The residents will see patients in the inpatient setting via Endocrine consult services, including the General Endocrinology and Diabetes services. The resident will see new and follow up consult patients selected at the discretion of the attending. By the end of the rotation, residents should be comfortable with thyroid diseases including biopsy when it is indicated, surgical versus medical management of pituitary disease, and the American Diabetes Association guidelines for diabetes management, the metabolic syndrome, hypercalcemia and parathyroid disease and to a lesser extent other less commonly encountered endocrine disorders. While on consults, the resident will work along with the fellow and attending to have autonomy to see the patient, perform the history and physical exam, and then perform a literature search on the topic. Then the resident will present the patient on rounds. The consult team will see the patient at the bedside and have bedside teaching. Then the team, including the resident can decide on treatment options and prognosis. It is expected that the resident review prior to the start of the rotation.
