Cardiology Electives

Electrophysiology (Senior Residents ONLY)

The Cardiology Electrophysiology rotation is a two-week long rotation. The service is run by the UFH or VA Cardiology EP attending. Residents participate in EP consults on inpatients and follow patients on the EP inpatient team (MCE) at UFH or VA. Residents will learn the diagnosis and treatment of common EP conditions and interventions. In general, the resident will see new consults every day, in addition to appropriate follow up on previously seen consult patients. The resident will also serve as a team member of the EP team. Residents may participate in procedures at the discretion of the EP attending.

VA Cardiology Consults 

The VA Cardiology Consultation Service is a two-week long rotation. The service is run by the VA Cardiology consult fellow and attending. Residents participate in cardiology consults on inpatients at VA. They do not take overnight call during this rotation. The resident will work with a Cardiology fellow and attending to see consults from the primary teams. This will allow first contact for Cardiology consultation. The resident will have autonomy to see the patient, perform the history and physical exam, perform a literature search on the topic, and compose a note. The resident will then present the patient on rounds.

Shands Cardiology Consults

The UFH Cardiology Consultation Service is a two-week long rotation. The service is led by the UFH Cardiology consult attending. Residents participate in cardiology consults on inpatients at UFH. They do not take call during this rotation. The resident will work with a Cardiology fellow and attending to see consults from the primary teams. This will allow first contact for Cardiology consultation. In general, the resident will see one to two new patients per day, in addition to appropriate follow up on previously seen patients. The resident will have autonomy to see the patient, perform the history and physical exam, and then perform a literature search on the topic. Then the resident will present the patient on rounds. The consult team will see the patient at the bedside and have bedside teaching. Then the team, including the resident can decide on treatment options.

VA Cardiology Clinic

The VA Cardiology Clinic rotation is a two-week long rotation. The residents will see patients in a variety of Cardiology clinics at the VA. The resident will have the opportunity to evaluate patients with heart failure, arrhythmias, coronary disease, valvular disease and other cardiac conditions working with the faculty and fellows of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. They will also be expected to participate in selected conferences of the Division, as listed below. If a clinic is not being held for a session, the resident will be expected to pursue independent reading and research on a clinical topic, and report to the supervising Attending on his or her findings.

Shands Cardiology Clinic

The UF Health Cardiology Clinic rotation is a two-week long rotation. The residents will see patients in a variety of Cardiology clinics at the SpringHill location. The resident will have the opportunity to evaluate patients with heart failure, arrhythmias, coronary disease, valvular disease and other cardiac conditions working with the faculty and fellows of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. They will also be expected to participate in selected conferences of the Division, as listed below. If a clinic is not being held for a session, the resident will be expected to pursue independent reading and research on a clinical topic, and report to the supervising Attending on his or her findings.

*Residents are still required to attend their continuity clinic, housestaff noon conference and department conferences unless approval is granted to attend the above conferences through direct communication with the Chief resident. 

Heart Failure (Senior Residents ONLY) - Now a Selective at VA and Shands

The Cardiology Heart Failure rotation is a two-week long rotation. The service is led by the UFH Cardiology Heart Failure attending. Residents follow patients on the Heart Failure inpatient team (MCH) at UFH. Residents will learn the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure and workup for patients undergoing transplant evaluation. The resident will work with the Cardiology fellow and attending on MCH.  In general, the resident will see one to two new patients each day, in addition to appropriate follow up on previously seen patients. The resident will have autonomy to see new patients, perform the history and physical exam, and then perform a literature search on the topic. The resident may also have the opportunity to rotate through the outpatient clinic. Residents may participate in any of their patient’s procedures at the discretion of the MCH attending.
