Shands Nephrology Consults
The UFH Nephrology rotation is a two-week rotation. The residents will have the opportunity to evaluate patients with both acute and chronic kidney disease (in a variety of settings such as medical and surgical ICU’s), electrolyte and acid-base abnormalities, acute and chronic kidney disease requiring renal replacement therapy such as dialysis, and other renal conditions. They will work directly with the faculty and fellows of the Division of Nephrology while on the wards. They will be tasked with seeing new and follow-up consults. The resident will have autonomy to see the patient, perform the history and physical exam, and then perform a literature search on the topic. Then the resident will present the patient on rounds. The consult team will see the patient at the bedside and have bedside teaching. Then the team, including the resident can decide on treatment options and prognosis. If procedures are done on these patients, it is expected that the resident attend the procedure having reviewed the recent literature regarding the indication of the procedure and the expected outcome. They will also be expected to participate in selected conferences of the Division, as listed below. The resident is expected to pursue independent reading if not actively participating in consults.
Shands Nephrology Clinic
The Outpatient Nephrology rotation is a two-week long rotation. The residents will have the opportunity to evaluate patients with a variety of kidney diseases, electrolyte and acid-base abnormalities, hypertension (essential or secondary such as renal artery stenosis and primary hyperaldosteronism), chronic cardiorenal syndrome, renal disease in solid organ transplant patients, polycystic kidney disease, nephrolithiasis, and other renal conditions. They will work directly with the faculty and fellows of the Division of Nephrology while in the clinic. They will be tasked with seeing new and follow-up patients. The resident will have autonomy to see the patient, perform the history and physical exam, and then perform a literature search on the topic. Then the resident will present the patient to the precepting attending. Then the team, including the resident can help decide on treatment options. They will also be expected to participate in selected conferences of the Division, as listed below. The resident is expected to pursue independent reading if not actively participating in consults.
The Nephrology clinics (except for transplant and Dr. Segal’s) are located in the first floor of Shands hospital where the Cardiology and the dental clinics are. The post-transplant clinic and Dr. Segal’s clinic are on the third floor of Shands Medical Plaza.
VA Nephrology Consults - Now a VA Selective

*Residents are still required to attend their continuity clinic, housestaff noon conference and department conferences unless approval is granted to attend the above conferences through direct communication with the Chief resident.
