1969

Jaguars Continue Dominance in the Big Ten

In 1969, more success followed with Jim McClanahan and Quarterback David Lacoma leading the way. In three years, there had been three conference titles in a row!  Continually amazing opponents and coaches, the 1969 Jaguars under head coach Bap Manzini completed another steller year finishing 8-1 and a third straight Big Ten championship.  The team averaged 24.1 points per game offensively, while yielding 11.4 defensively.

What makes a good football team?  Many will say outstanding players, others will say it is the one who takes advantage of the breaks.  But as often is the case, it goes beyond this.  The impetus supplied by a tremendous head coach and his staff is vital as is the desire that is instilled into each and everyone of the players.  With a 24-4 record in the last three championship seasons, the Jaguars success has affected the entire school.  The 12th Man, "Let's stay number one", bonfire, the trophy presentation- these were all part of a thrilling year.  Twenty-three seniors will be gone when July rolls around, but the team is a constant reminder to not underestimate the Jaguars when Bap Manzini is around.

The sweat, the tears, the pain the joys are all things of the past. But the satisfaction and sense of triumph will remain with the players, the student body, and the school forever.
