Conner Steps Down After Second Losing Season
The Art Conner era came to an end after a disappointing season of 2-7, and was the second straight losing record for the young Jaguars during their second year of being official members of the WPIAL. The year 1962 was a “long” season for the Jaguars. There were only two victories. Wins were recorded over Fox Chapel and North Allegheny. One bright spot was the introduction of some new uniforms and some modern helmets.
Get rid of those hideous leather helmets, PLEASE!
Bright spots included the play of speedy halfback Jeff Getty, fullback Bill Griffiths, quarterback Bob Horn and rugged junior linemen like Sam Brnilovich, Dennis Brain, Ron Karloski, and Wayne Janczewski. Senior end Lesley George was a dependable receiver and Lee Beten provided lots of speed.
The team opened the season at Swissvale where they were soundly defeated by a 39-7 score. The next week they played Elizabeth Forward who would go on to lose only two games all year, and kept the score tight before falling. West Mifflin North overcame a fine passing display by quarterback Bob Horn with a punishing ground attack winning 40-7. At Fox Chapel, led by Bill Griffiths and Bob Horn, the Jaguars garnered their first victory in four games 20-13.
Brentwood defeated TJ on their own muddy field. Bethel Park in the following week came storming back to shock the Jaguars 26-25, even though halfback Jeff Getty ran for 180 yards. The next week Monongahela staved off a last minute drive to defeat the Jaguars 18-12. The next game came against North Hills who used a single wing and long passes to handle TJ convincingly 38-13. The final game would salvage a long season that had its fair share of close games, and this would be no different. North Allegheny fell to the Jaguars 28-27.
Although this was to be Coach Art Connor's last season as he resigned after the season ended, a positive note was that this team had a roster of 64 players. Interest, therefore, in football was high, and with seven juniors earninf significant playing time the future looked bright.
