1960

Jaguars Establishing a Reputation

In their second year of varsity football the Jaguars turned in a terrific season under head coach Art Conner finishing the season at 7-1-1.   They were not eligible for the playoffs, as membership into the WPIAL was a year away.

In the fall of 1960, the Jaguars surprised the community when they posted the fantastic 7 -1-1 record. The only loss came against neighborhood rival Elizabeth-Forward. There were major upset victories posted against the likes of West Mifflin North, Bethel Park, Monongahela, and North Hills.

Mere words cannot describe the excellance of the 1960 Thomas Jefferson Jaguars and their 7-1-1 record.

The team coached by Arthur Conner, went on to cop second place in the Western Penn Conference, just missing a tie for first place with Gateway by one point. Also our boys were second only to Clairton in the final district standings. The team played four "AA" games, three "A" games, and two "B" games. The boys defeated Snowden, West Mifflin North, South Fayette, Wilmerding, Bethel, Monongahela, and North Hills, while only losingto EF and tying Brentwood. The victories over West Mifflin North and Bethel were huge upsets. The team finished with a better record than any of the teams they played. The fleet backfield of John Kosar, Larry Kalcevic, Phil Caligiure, Carmen Sporio, and Mike Foreman scored 119 points while the rock-ribbed defense held our opponents to 103 points. It can be said with full sincerity that it was the 1960 team that put TJ on the map.

Leading the team was versatile triple threat quarterback John Kosar and speedy backs like Phil Caliguire, Mike Foreman, Larry Kalcevic, and Cannen Sporio. Senior End Ron Wehrer was a sure-handed receiver and the blocking of Tom Ifft, Dale Saller, Geny Boggess, and sophomore guards Bill Griffiths and Milan Vucin, opened up the holes in the defensive line.

The T.J. defensive line was led by aggressive linemen like John Magiske and Bob Castagna.

As an aside, it was interesting to note that the Jaguar uniforms consisted of black pants with a gold stripe and gold home jerseys with shoulder stripes. There also were the now infamous yellow leather helmets, a la Notre Dame!
