Jaguars Mired in Fourth Straight Losing Season

During head coach Jerry Urda's final season as the Jaguar head man, the team completed its fourth straight losing season.  Finishing their record at 1-9 with their only win coming against Bishop Boyle in the third game of the season.  Despite the losses their were some bright spots to the season.

In Coach Urda’s second and last season, more realistic goals were set. A hard working group of players assembled on the “Rock Pile” for 2-a-day practices in August heat. Before each practice the team would line up on one side of the field and walk across, picking up every stone or rock they could find, then pitch them over the hill. This daily ritual is recalled by many alumni, even today!

Though the players gave great effort, the only victory was a 27-7 pasting of Bishop Boyle.

Offensively, only 72 points were scored to the opponents 278.

Still, some players stood out such as Quarterback Rich Castagna,

Wing Jack Gillen, Center/linebacker Joe Kolvek, runningback/safety Jim Ashman, and fullback Wayne Fisher. Lineman included Jim Hazen, Dale Harry, Rick Niccolai, and Jay Weber.

One highlight or lowlight of the season was the home game versus Monongahela. This team was loaded with many future college players and they proved it by pounding the Jaguars 48-6. The only team to beat Monongahela was WPIAL Champ Alliquippa at Pitt Stadium, 14-7. On a positive note, a few promising sophomores did move into the lineup. They included “Fuzzy” Fedela, Jim Buches, and Tommy Cochran.
