Background of 1952 Language Movement
In the decades of 1920s and 1930s, the Indian sub-continent was determined to gain independence from the British in a non-violent way. India was a very heterogeneous nation, containing large populations of believers of both the Hindu and Muslim faith. If a nation-state was to be formed to take the place of the British Empire, it would have to address these questions about religion and ethnicity, and how they would be contained in the framework of the new state. The British finally left India in 1947, but before they left, the sub-continent was partitioned to form two independent sovereign states of the Dominion of India and Dominion of Pakistan. Being a dominion meant that these countries would govern themselves, but still remain part of the British Commonwealth. India contained a majority Hindu population and Pakistan was created as a land for the Muslim population. A major flaw persisted in the architecture of the boundary of Pakistan; the Eastern and the Western parts of the Pakistan almost thousands of miles apart by each other while India sat in the middle of West and East Pakistan. Although the Western and the Eastern wings of Pakistan shared the same religious faith; they differed significantly in culture and language. The Eastern part of Pakistan (modern day Bangladesh) was mainly Bangla speaking population and the Western part of Pakistan used to speak Urdu. The West used to dominate the country’s government and influence the vital policies; they ignored the concerns of the Eastern constituents. The West even went to the extent of revoking the use of Bangla as a medium of instruction and language of business in all government schools and offices from the Bangla speaking population in East Pakistan, and decreed that only Urdu be used instead.
Discontent was brewing in East Pakistan. The Bangla language was a major source of identification for the inhabitants of this region. The rich cultural heritage of this language has been a rich treasure-trove of both inspiration and identification for the local populace; they took the name of their ethnic group, Bengali, from the language, and celebrated the rich body of work comprising of stories, novels, poems and dramas by such authors as Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam. The instatement of only Urdu as the state language of Pakistan, would mean that Bangla could not be used as a medium of instruction in public educational institutions, nor to conduct official government business in courts and government offices. This was completely unacceptable to the inhabitants of East Pakistan. A conflict was brewing in the air.
