Browncoat Bay

This series of articles is about the science fiction franchise Firefly by Joss Whedon.  While I have always been an avid fan of sci-fiction, Firefly is, by far, my favorite.  It is full of exotic places, fascinating plots, and great writing.

Firefly was a short-lived show that ran during the 2002-2003 season.  Of the fourteen episodes that were created, only 11 were broadcast (all 14 appear on the DVD set).  The show was moved around on the schedule and preempted by other TV events, and therefore canceled prematurely.  But Firefly was so amazing and the fans were so vocal, that a few years later, in 2005, Joss brought everyone back and released a feature length movie, called Serenity, which picked up right where the show left off.

Like myself, many discovered the show and the movie several years after they had come out, and the fanbase is only growing more and more every day.  Firefly fans, or flans as they are called, have created podcasts, blogs, music about the show (called firefilk), and even fan movies.  Browncoats may be down, but, we are definitely not out!

If you are tired of the derivative and stale state of sci-fi today, I would definitely encourage you to read our first article below, “An Eclectic Show for an Eclectic Guy” from our very first edition of The Eclectic Kasper.  That article will orient you to Firefly, and hopefully compel you to get the DVDs and watch them for yourself.  Firefly appeals to just about everyone, so I guarantee you, you will not be disappointed!
