Washington

This is an extremely well balanced and powerful team. They are aiming for the championship with a consistent game.

Quarterback – Doug Williams – Williams has all the same skills and abilities as Phil Simms, except of course he’s not Phil Simms. It’s not Doug Williams fault Washington sucks since he’s a perfectly acceptable quarterback, it’s just that Washington needs a guy like Marino at the helm in order to have a fighting chance. Did I mention he’s black?

Running Back – Timmy Smith – Below average but not terrible, Smith really doesn’t have much of a chance to do anything with Washington’s one running back running play. Smith seems to have the problem of not being able to pull away from a defender after he puts a decent juke on them for those key extra two or three yards.

Receiving Corps – Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders, Clint Didier – A very strong receiving core that really doesn’t get to show off its’ talents. Gary Clark is Tecmo’s premier top wide receiver with almost as much top speed as Jerry Rice. Ricky Sanders is a talented wide receiver as well with very good speed. The tight end Didier has the minimum talent levels and doesn’t bring anything to the table, but Clark and Sanders make this one of Tecmo’s impressive receiving cores.

Offensive Line - Russ Grimm, Jeff Bostic, R. Thielemann – Three minimum talents and one very good player gives Washington a offensive line in the top half of the league surprisingly. Grimm is the star with tons of power and good speed. Not a lot else to say.

Defense – If nothing else, and there’s nothing else, Washington has one hell of a mean defense. Anchored by the Doom Combo of Dexter Manley and Charles Mann at the end positions Washington has one of Tecmo’s premier defenses on par with other mega defensive powers New York and Chicago. After Manley and Mann, Washington also has some of the finest role players in the game. Safeties Wilburn and Green give plenty of over the top help, and top outside linebacker Marshall is second only to New York’s Carl Banks at his position. This is an outstanding defense capable of giving any offense fits. They need to perfect though thanks to the offense, and that’s not good news for any defense.

Kick Returner – Darrell Green – Better then average capable of the occasional big return, but Washington really needs a Gentry/McNeil type of killer returning their kicks for them. Darrell Green is not a killer.

Kicker – Jess Atkinson – One of the worst kickers in the game, Atkinson makes it tough for the offensively retarded Redskins, as he needs to be inside the 40-yard line to make a kick. To recap, Jess Atkinson sucks.

Punter – Steve Cox – A good punter who really helps Washington keep the field position it earns with its amazing defense. Cox can punt the ball approximately 71 yards.

Star Player – Dexter Manley – The Run Assassin is one of Tecmo Bowl’s top defensive stars, and from his right end position he gives all offenses a difficult time. His great speed and position lets Washington control the opponents running game and gives Washington one of the game’s best defenses. His running buddy Charles Mann at left end deserves some recognition as well, but clearly it’s Dexter Manley’s team.

Overall – Washington has plenty of talent, especially on the defensive side of the ball, but their playbook really hurts them. Without any real offense at all, and just average special teams, the defense needs to carry the team. They can do it but it’s not the formula for success when you end up going into OT tied 0-0 because you can’t score any points. Washington is one of the three worst teams in the game.
