Chicago was the top in defense last year. On offense, Chicago's Rusher, "PAYTON", has been running circles around the defenses.
Quarterback - Jim McMahon - Statistically he's only ahead of the legendary Jack Trudeau in the pivotal arm strength category (yes even behind Danny White), but Chicago doesn't rely on clutch passing in the slightest. Most of their passing is quick dump offs and wide open passes, so McMahon's lack of talent really doesn't hurt this team at all. He's basically a non-factor when talking about Chicago, in both a positive and negative sense.
Running Back - Walter Payton - One of the best running backs in Tecmo Bowl, Walter Payton gives Chicago a fearsome ground attack. With his blazing speed Payton can really devastate lesser defenders, and knows how to make a defense pay for not calling a lot of run. He also figures prominently into the Chicago passing attack. Overall Payton is an elite running back, with top-notch speed, and big play ability.
Receiving Corps - Willie Gault, Ron Morris, Cap Boso - Below average overall, but not really hurting Chicago's offense that much. The top wide receiver Willie Gault is a solid receiver with a little speed, but not a gamebreaker. The bottom wide receiver Ron Morris has the minimum talent for a receiver but sees so little ball it doesn't matter. There might not be a more invisible wide receiver in Tecmo then Ron Morris. Cap Boso, the tight end, is at the minimum talent level, but that is pretty common for Tecmo tight ends. Overall this is below average, with no standouts, but the way Chicago's offense is designed it doesn't make a big difference.
Offensive Line - Jim Covert, Jay Hilgenberg, Mark Bortz, Van Horne - A very powerful offensive line, only behind Indianapolis. Hilgenburg brings speed and tons of power to the unit, as he's one of the elite offensive lineman in the game. Covert also brings plenty of power to the table giving Chicago a powerful 1-2 duo on the line. Bortz and Horne are the minimum talent, but Hilgenburg and Covert combine to give Chicago one of the games best offensive lines.
Defense - An elite defense, up there with New York and Washington. This defense is stacked, but held back by the awkward 4-3 design. Mike Singletary plays middle linebacker and thus is blocked on running plays, taking away most of his effectiveness. Luckily for Chicago they are so stacked they can go to their top safety Dave Duerson for some big plays. He's one of the top three safeties in all of Tecmo Bowl. Chicago's defense also has Mongo McMichael at defensive tackle. He is a very good player capable of stopping some teams running attacks cold. As if there wasn't enough stars on the defense Chicago also has some nice role players as well, like bottom linebacker Otis Wilson, right end Richard Dent, and left end Dan Hampton. Overall this is easily one of the best three defenses in the game.
Kick Returner - Mike Gentry - The best kick returner in the game, Mike Gentry is a killer. Other teams need to fear and respect him, even change their gameplan to avoid him, because he can take any kick to the house for seven at any time. You really can't stop Gentry, you have to contain him, and even that can be difficult. Gentry and Cleveland's McNeil are the only kick returners in the game who leave you disappointed if you "only" get to the 30-yard line.
Kicker - Kevin Butler - Tecmo Bowl's second best field goal kicker can hit up to 45 yards. Being able to hit deep field goals makes things even easier on Chicago's already very good offense, and is a very nice asset for the team.
Punter - Bryan Wagner - The fourth worst punter in the game Wagner really holds back Chicago from winning any field position battles against tough opposition. His maximum distance is about 61 yards, which is a full 10 yards less then the good punters.
Star Player - Walter Payton - He is an elite back who makes the offense go. Chicago has so many stars on defense they kind of cancel each other out, leaving Payton to be the star player.
Overall - Chicago is a team to be respected and feared. With Payton on offense, tons of talent on defense, and Gentry on special teams, Chicago is damn powerful on all sides of the ball. They are an elite team, capable of squashing lesser teams and beating everyone. Basically you don't want to mess with Chicago.
