Seattle is a team with a lot of talent. They’re coming off a strong season, but can they in the championship?
Quarterback – Dave Krieg – Everyone’s favourite drunk, Krieg is pretty overrated, and has a penchant for making mistakes. It’s not that you can’t win with Krieg quarterbacking; it’s just that he’s not winning you any games.
Running Back – Curt Warner – A good running back, who defenses need to respect, but he’s not a true game-breaker like some of the elite running backs. His stats say he’s as quick as Walker but that seems a little too high, as he’s not a killer like Walker is. Warner is a very adequate running back, but Seattle needs him to be a killer.
Receiving Corps – Steve Largent, Daryl Turner, J. Williams – A pretty pitiful group, there’s really not a lot here. Largent has above average top speed but struggles with cuts and jukes, Turner is the worst wide receiver in the game with appalling top speed, and Williams is the generic minimum talent tight end. Overall this a bad group with only Largent keeping it slightly above Dallas/Denver receiver core level of terrible. Although I think everyone has a soft spot for a receiving core featuring a white guy who is also a congressman.
Offensive Line – Bryan Millard, Blair Bush, Edwin Bailey, Ron Mattes – All bare minimum talent guys, meaning Seattle is tied with New York and Dallas for the honour of being the worst offensive line in the game.
Defense – A weak defense that can really struggle to stop some teams. Fredd Young is far and away the best defensive player on the field for Seattle, and plays the very important top middle linebacker position. Outside of Young, Seattle is kind of thin, with just a couple of barely serviceable players in left end Green and top safety Easely. Bosworth is seems decent but is in an awkward position, and Fredd Young has your middle linebacker needs covered. Everyone else on the defense is basically trash and bring nothing to the table.
Kick Returner – B. J. Edmonds – Maybe the most over-rated player in the game. The stats say he’s Tecmo Bowl’s 3rd best kick returner, but he rarely ever does anything above average, never mind spectacular. If he lived up to his skills Seattle would be in serious business, but instead BJ does what he does best: suck dick.
Kicker – Norm Johnson – The worst kicker in Tecmo Bowl. Norm’s maximum distance is approximately the 38-yard line. Just a very crippling factor for Seattle to overcome. 38 yards, that’s just weak.
Punter – R. Rodriguez – The 2nd worst punter in Tecmo Bowl. Only Denver’s Horan rates worse. Rodriguez can punt the ball about 55 yards, which is not very good at all considering the game average of 65-66 and Landeta’s max of 76 yards. The endless bad field position from lousy punting really hurts this Seattle team.
Star Player – Fredd Young – Undoubtedly the star of the team, Fredd Young anchors this franchise with his strong play from the top middle linebacker position. Young has blazing speed for a linebacker (only Lawrence Taylor, Mike Singletary, and Carl Banks can match speed with him), has plenty of tackling power, and provides great play from a pivotal defensive position. Young really holds the defense together as the rest of the unit is pretty weak. Easily the star of the team.
Overall – Seattle has the makings of a good team with a very solid running back and an actual star defensive player in Fredd Young, but they are missing too many pieces to be a real contender. Extremely weak special teams, poor defensive role players, and a quarterback with a penchant for mistakes, Seattle just doesn’t have what it takes to be an upper echelon team. They do have enough talent to handle the lesser teams however. Overall this is a below average team.
