"ELWAY" is a popular Quarterback and is almost a one-man team offense. But the defense has its ups and downs.
Quarterback – John Elway – What can you really say about John Elway? He’s one of Tecmo’s Big Three quarterbacks, alongside Marino and Montana, and can move around in the pocket better then anyone. Tied with Montana in arm strength, only slightly behind Marino, Elway has blazing speed for a quarterback and can spend a lot of time in the pocket avoiding defenders waiting for a play to develop. Under quarterback running is allowed rules Elway is Tecmo Bowl’s QB Eagles, capable of ripping up any defense with his arm or his legs. Elway is either the second or third best quarterback in Tecmo, essentially a toss-up with Montana, and quite frankly they both make a good case. John Elway baby.
Running Back – Tony Dorsett – Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett. A rock solid running back, Dorsett has enough speed to make a defense pay for not respecting him, and he shows strong big play ability at times. Not on the elite level, but is all you could ask for in a running back. Plus he’s a Hall of Famer.
Receiving Corps - Ricky Nattiel, Mark Jackson, Clarence Kay – An absolutely pathetic group of receivers, not one guy above the minimal talent level. This unit is tied with Dallas for worst in the game. None of these guys will be getting any YAC, really cutting down on Denver’s ability to pick up cheap 1st downs. Just terrible.
Offensive Line – Keith Bishop, Mike Freeman, S. Humphries, Dave Studdard – Slightly below average overall. Freeman, Humpries, and Studdard are all minimum talent guys not bringing a lot to the table. Bishop brings this group up with his about average speed and good power.
Defense – Denver has a nice defense. Not blowing anyone away, but always capable of shuting a team down. Mecklenburg is the star at top middle linebacker, one of the five best linebackers in the game. His strong play really anchors the defense against the run and the pass. Rulon Jones provides solid play from always pivotal right end He has decent speed, and can shut down the opposite side run pretty well. He’s not the most consistent guy in the world, but still a really good guy to have on the squad. The rest of the defense isn’t high on skill but they can get it done. Overall this is a solid defense with its star players in the right positions.
Kick Returner – Ken Bell – Pretty average. Not going to really break a game open for you, but he can post some decent returns. There’s really not a lot to say about Ken Bell. He’s a role player.
Kicker – Rich Karlis – He can put it through from about the 41. While that’s not super terrible, you definitely want more.
Punter – Mike Horan – Statistically the worst punter in the game Whoran is exactly that. With a maximum punting distance of about 55 yards Denver gives away a lot of field position thanks to this bum, which really costs them against the better teams, as it puts their offense consistency in bad starting position.
Star Player – John Elway – I guess you could make a case for Mecklenburg, but clearly John Elway is the heart and soul of this Denver team. They aren’t winning without him, and who better to have on your side in the dying minutes then the man himself?
Overall – Denver is a powerful team capable of beating anyone. Their offense is dangerous, their defense is good, and they have John Elway. The only real weaknesses are the terrible receiving core and their lowly special teams. These hold Denver back from being an elite mega power but they most definitely get the job done as is. Arguably the 4th best team in the game.
