Hello GSA Listers, I am running unopposed once again for the office of sports tsar, despite my attempts to create competition of the position artificially. So, instead of actually campaigning, I was thinking this would be an opportunity to update what's gone on in the last year, and I can be modest about what role I actually had. Basically, I did what I did before the position of sports tsar was created, which was to let people know what organized and semi-organized sporting events existed that I knew of, except that as sports tsar I expanded my target audience from people I know to people I know plus the collective graduate community. Also, I have a magic wand for tsars. Specifically, I helped, at least partially, form intramural teams for volleyball (in the A and B Leagues), basketball (in the B and Co-ed Leagues), and indoor soccer (in the B League), and plan to form a team for softball for sure, and for ultimate frisbee if any administrative momentum is needed. We also had outdoor volleyball going during the summer, and Friday night volleyball when the gym was unoccupied. Overall, it was work inasmuch as going to watch and play sports is work, and that I got home past my bedtime sometimes. It isn't like I didn't have help and that there weren't sports that existed without my assistance. The sports tsar gets a little money, and with it I covered some intramural deposits, which were refunded minus penalties for two forfeits (argh!), and I bought a nice volleyball rather than a "eh, good enough" ball, which I promptly vandalized to look like a soccer ball. I have no big plans for the next year. I would like to think this is not for lack of creativity on my part, but rather that I am usually kept amused by simply sticking a ball or toy of some kind in my hands. In any case, I'll keep my ears open for ideas. I'll continue to keep people informed about intramurals and regular pick-up sports. I'll also try to tone down the blistering commentaries against the state of Missouri and its inhabitants. They say that power corrupts, and I am no exception. Just two years ago, I was a simple softball captain, and now I control sports I was mostly ignorant about, like soccer and volleyball. At this pace, I will be Ruler of the Universe some time in the next 20,000 years, but in the meantime, I think I'd be content to be sports tsar for another year.
