gphoto2/gtkam
Photo download application
Plugging in a camera via USB cable doesn't always mount it. One solution I looked up was gphoto2 and its graphical companion gtkam.
My camera's instructions, and gphoto2's instructions, recommend plugging the camera in before turning it on. The command to check whether gphoto2 has recognized it is:
gphoto2 --auto-detect
If the camera is recognized, it will show up in the output of this command. In addition to having to turn on the camera, I found that I needed to have the camera in playback mode.
At this point, I tried the graphical interface to transfer photos. Upon starting gtkam, if the camera is recognized, it will scan the camera's disk, which takes a few seconds. The camera disk's file system should be navigatable when ready. If not, you may need to re-scan. When transferring files, I checked the box to keep the original name. Annoyingly, I couldn't paste a directory path into the text field; I needed to click through the explorer.
