To Whom It May Concern: I am running for the position of Sports Coordinator. Last I heard, I am the only person nominated for this office. I figure at this time, with various candidates writing and concerned GSA-listers reading these personal statements, this would be a good time to outline what I plan on doing in the likely event of my election, i.e. barring a well-organized or simply lucky conspiracy to elect Mickey Mouse or the like. In my experience in student government dating back to 1993, between RPI and Brandeis, this is probably the first time I have qualifications other than simply interest in the office. In my three-and-a-half years at Brandeis, I have six seasons of intramural experience in softball (three as captain), one in volleyball (serving as "Life Science Liaison"), four in basketball, and one in flag football. I am also listed on the roster this semester of the soccer team "The Antediluvian Bloc," although I don't play soccer, serving as Emergency Forfeit-Buster. As I mentioned in the most recent version of the GSA newsletter, keeping everyone up to date on intramural sports is what I consider the primary function of the sports coordinator. For this semester's soccer and softball seasons, I've used the GSA Mailing List to search for players and have found a home for some on intramural teams. As not everyone is on the mailing list, I'd like to be able to distribute, via the departmental representatives, notices in people's mailboxes apprising them of upcoming sporting events. Beyond the realm of intramurals, if anyone is looking for squash, tennis, etc. partners, I could serve as a centralized contact person. During the summer, when there are no intramural sports, nor TGIF to drain the pool of people starting their weekend a little early, I plan on organizing pickup softball. These are all the ideas I have, but I am willing to listen for more. I am told the sports coordinator will receive a small amount of money, on the order of $250, so I was thinking this money could go towards supplies and team deposits. I know now that I'd like to have a good volleyball and basketball for people to use. Funds remaining could go towards a minor-league baseball team. In summary: don't not vote for me.
