KUALA LUMPUR: The issuance of cyber cafe licences in Kuala Lumpur and Labuan will be frozen temporarily as part of government efforts to check social problems at such premises.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansorsaid this measure had to be taken to overcome the problems regarding the cyber cafes which had turned into cyber gambling centres and the abuse of the cyber cafe licences issued to the cafe owners.
"Putrajaya is not affected because there are no cyber cafes there.
"The problem can no longer be ignored because the abuse of such licences have been repeated too often," he told reporters after the presentation of Excellent Service Awards to the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Education Department staff.
A total of 715 officers and other staff of the department received the award with Tengku Adnan giving away 450 of the awards while the balance were handed over by the Titiwangsa Member of Parliament, Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani.
Meanwhile, Tengku Adnan would also bring up to the Cabinet meeting tomorrow the haze problem faced by Kuala Lumpur following the jungle burning in Indonesia. - Bernama
