SHAH ALAM (Nov 21, 2013): The Selangor state government will formulate a more effective enactment to address the problem of gambling in cyber cafes using computers, said Chairman of the Local Government, Study and Research Standing Committee Datuk Teng Chang Khim.
He said this law will give the local authorities more power compared to the current law which does not allow them to take effective action against the existence of cyber gambling centres in the state.
Teng said this when answering a question by Shahrum Mohd Sharif (BN-Dengkil) during a question and answer session at the State Legislative Assembly here today about measures the local authorities are taking to tackle the problem since there are centres which are back in operation barely 24 hours after being raided by the authorities.
He said so far local authorities could only seize the computers used in gambling but the cyber cafe operators can start operating again by paying only a maximum compound of RM1,000 to recover the seized computers.
Therefore, the government plans to introduce in the enactment that is being drafted that computers used in gambling once seized cannot be returned to the cyber cafe operators.
The state government also intends to ensure that those applying for a cyber cafe licence must use two software specifically for the purpose of monitoring, he said. However, the arrest and prosecution of those involved in gambling in cyber cafes can only be done by the police.
Teng also said the Selangor government was studying the need for enforcement members to be equipped with taser guns to protect themselves while on duty. – Bernama
