Course Description: The United States is today one of the largest economies in the world. What has helped make the US the economic powerhouse it is today, one that provides its present population with a very high standard of living? The story of American economic history is about the growth and development of a giant economy from very small, inconsequential beginnings. This course will examine the economic, legal, political and social developments that made a difference. Topics that will be covered include industrialization, immigration, the development of financial markets, and the rise of various types of legal and economic institutions important in the performance of an economy.

We will also cover financial history and discuss economic depressions and business cycles over the last two centuries. You will learn how financial markets have evolved over the long run.

Recommended for all economics and history majors as well as for students in business, political science or any other social science.
