On 22 April 2010, I gave a talk to the Atlanta Perl Mongers on using a network protocol analyzer (a "sniffer") to identify the inputs and outputs of a complex system. The talk explains the original motivation for using this technique and gives an overview of the method. The slides from the talk are available for download in Acrobat (.pdf) format.
